Without scents in the air,
Pungent with pine and mushrooms and moss
And red-berry mountain ash,
Everywhere.

I feel the crunch of coloured leaves
As I walk down the street.
Until I hear a Bluejay call
And see geese in the sky
In their V-shaped fleet;
Unless among birch trees standing tall,
Mists gently meander
Through their branches high,
And I can smell woodsmoke floating by,
My joy is not complete.

Twittering sparrows and chipmunks small,
